MAPS Messaging Policy for Member Chat on Signal Platform
(Cleared by MAPS National Board on 8/23/2023)
Purpose:
To foster an inclusive, supportive, and focused professional communication space for members of Muslim Americans in Public Service.
Scope:
This policy applies to all members of the MAPS Signal (or other communication) platform.
I. General Expectations:
- Messages made by members or leadership in their personal capacity on this platform do not constitute official positions or imply endorsement by MAPS National.
- The National Member chat and Board Committee chats are restricted to current MAPS members only. All non-members must first register as MAPS Members via our website before joining Signal chats. While we encourage members to promote participation in our chat platforms among fellow members, and highly encourage sharing MAPS and extending invitations to your own networks for the health and growth of our national community, sharing links or inviting known non-members to MAPS chat groups is not permitted. We kindly ask that members share our website (www.mapsnational.org) with outside groups or connections they would like to invite to MAPS. New members receive invitations to all chat groups automatically upon sign up and again in each member email. When in doubt, be sure to either ask whether they are already members or invite them to sign up by forwarding our website alongside chat links or member emails.
- We strive to maintain a safe and conducive virtual community. The inclusion of unknown or unidentifiable parties will likely have a chilling effect on candid communications shared by our senior members, elected or appointed officials, and others with sensitive roles. Joining chat platforms anonymously or with minimally identifiable handles or visible names, such as initials or nicknames/ monikers, is not permitted. While full names are not required, members must use their first or last names at a minimum while participating or posting in the chat groups. Posting under your first name and last initial is encouraged, and adding your agency, city, and/or title in parentheses may help you stand out and improve engagement quality.
II. Permitted Communications:
- Personal Success Stories: Members are encouraged to share personal achievements, experiences, and inspirational stories that resonate with the objectives/ spirit of MAPS.
- Personal Messages: Members can share personal messages of encouragement, support, or other positive sentiments in line with the ethos of MAPS.
- Professional Development: Sharing of resources, events, courses, or experiences that promote professional growth among members is encouraged.
- Networking Opportunities: Members are welcome to post about networking events, webinars, and other opportunities that can enhance professional relationships.
- Career Postings: Job vacancies, fellowships, details, secondments, internships, and other career opportunities relevant to the MAPS community can be shared (especially those for which MAPS members are or know the hiring manager or selection authority).
- Domestic public policy at the Federal, State, or local level that affects the Muslim American community in general or public servants in particular, and related policy campaigns or initiatives of MAPS partner organizations for membership support.
- Announcements, events, programs, or services of Federal, State or local government, or MAPS partner organizations relevant to the MAPS community may be shared.
- Sharing or amplifying existing, nominated, or prospective Muslim American public servants or public officials for visibility or awareness of the membership.
III. Communications Not Permitted:
- Off-topic Discussions: Any communication outside of the group’s mission or not relevant to the categories stated above is discouraged.
- Promotion of Personal Businesses: While members can share their achievements, the platform should not be used as a space to advertise or promote personal businesses or ventures unrelated to the MAPS mission.
- Discussions or debate on US foreign policy or international affairs beyond a career or public service focus (foreign service, uniformed services, etc.)
- Divisive or Controversial Topics: Avoid discussions that can cause divisions, especially those not related to the objectives of MAPS. This especially includes content that can be viewed as inflammatory or derogatory.
- Announcements, events, programs, or services of non-partner organizations must receive advanced clearance of moderators before they may be shared.
- Sharing of Private Information: Respect privacy. Do not share another person’s private or personal information or messages without explicit permission.
- Spamming: Repeatedly sending the same message is strictly prohibited.
- Direct messaging members with personal or sexual harassment or uninvited/ unwanted solicitations may result in removal from the platform(s) or other actions as deemed necessary by the moderators.
IV. Moderation & Reporting:
- Moderators: MAPS National Executive Board Members (who are listed as chat admins alongside Advisory Council members) will serve as Moderators to ensure the communication stays within the policy guidelines. They will have the right to remove or flag content deemed inappropriate.
- Reporting: If members find any content that violates the policy, they are urged to report it to the moderators immediately.
- Feedback Loop: Members may provide feedback on the policy to help it remain current, relevant, or effective. Please contact MAPS’ Chair at chair@mapsnational.org, or Membership Director at membership@mapsnational.org with your thoughts or suggested amendments accordingly.
V. Consequences for Violation:
- First Violation: A gentle reminder of the policy guidelines.
- Second Violation: Possible removal from the platform or other actions as deemed necessary by the moderators.
VI. Review and Updates:
This policy will be reviewed annually or as needed to ensure its relevance and effectiveness.
