MAPS Condemns the Reassignment of Educator Shayma Alzubi and Calls for Policies That Protect the Rights and Dignity of All in the Workplace

Muslim Americans in Public Service Condemns the Reassignment of Educator Shayma Alzubi and Calls for Policies That Protect the Rights and Dignity of All in the Workplace

The recent reassignment of Shayma Alzubi, a dedicated public servant and educator in Fort Worth ISD, following backlash linked to her religion and personal beliefs is deeply concerning.

Ms. Alzubi has served the Fort Worth community since 2013, demonstrating professionalism, dedication, and a commitment to her students. Her reassignment, coming on the heels of criticism targeting her faith and her support for social justice issues, raises serious questions about religious freedom, equity, and fair treatment in public service.

The decision to remove a qualified educator from their post should be based solely on professional performance, not on the expression of personal beliefs or identity. We call on Fort Worth ISD and state authorities to ensure that investigations and personnel decisions are conducted impartially, transparently, and free from political or religious bias.

Ms. Alzubi’s experience reflects the broader challenges faced by Muslim Americans and other minority groups who continue to serve their communities with distinction while navigating increasing scrutiny for their values.Respect for religious freedom and equal treatment are fundamental principles that must be upheld in educational institutions and workplaces alike. We stand in solidarity with those facing discrimination on the basis of faith and call for policies that protect the rights and dignity of all individuals.
